Picture Series Technique



Skill                             : Writing (Narrative Paragraph)
Component                : Vocabulary and Grammar.
Description    
This technique uses the series of picture to elicit a story from the student. In addition, the teacher present the ordered picture series to the student and ask the student to tell about the pictures being presented, each picture will tell about the different events, characters and situation which indirectly guide the student to build a simple story. This technique is expected to increase students’ ability in composing a short narrative paragraph and also to add some new vocabularies.
Aim     : to draw on children’s language resources to tell a story. Develop students’ creativity
Preparation :
1.      Find a story and adapt it where necessary to suit your students
2.      Make the flash cards which divide the story into some parts.
3.      Prepare the possible pre- teach vocabularies that may be used in applying the technique.
Steps
1.      Pre-teach the necessary vocabularies, example, if you use the “Three Little Pig” story, the vocabularies could be wolf, blow, run, straw, wood and bricks. Make sure the students understand about the vocabularies that are given. If the story is in the past form, make sure the student recognize the past form of those vocabularies, the teacher could give “simple past tense” at first.
2.      Explain to the students that you are going to tell them a story, but in this case, you can’t speak because of certain thing (e.g. You have sore throat). You only can use the pictures and mime; therefore, they must try and guess what you are trying to say. Don’t forget to give them the title of the story.
3.      Show the pictures to the students and elicit some sentences from the students. Use gestures such as nodding, shaking your head to correct them until you have got more or less what you want. Get one or two children to repeat the sentence.
4.      Compose all the student’s opinions and make a full story. Moreover, read the story for your students.
Advantages                : the advantage of this technique can be formulated as follow:
1.      The students easily compose the story because there are pictures that will guide them step by step to make a full story.
2.      The students will feel relax in composing the story as they feel that they are playing with the cards (pictures).
3.      They are not being forced to build a story and their confidence is gradually increased.
4.      There is habit formation in this technique ( building knowledge, modeling, construction and self-construction)
Disadvantages            : as nothing perfect in the world, so does the technique. This technique has its own weaknesses namely:   
1.      Students which have lack of vocabulary will find difficulty to compose the story
2.      The teacher will difficult to consider the time to show each picture, it depend on the students’ ability.
3.      The class will be noise if the teacher can’t manage the class well.

INSIDE / OUTSIDE CIRCLE TECHNIQUE

Skill : Listening and Speaking (Public Place)
Component : Vocabulary
Definition of techique : 
A method of learning in which students share information at the same time, with a different partner with a brief and orderly. A tactic that involves placing students in two circles – one – circle within the other – so that they face each other. This structure facilitates dialogue between and encourages community building.
Aim : to review vocabulary terms and getting information about the subject (Public Place).
Preparation :
1.      Find a subject (Public Place) and adapt it where necessary to suit your students
2.      Prepare the possible pre- teach vocabularies that may be used in applying the technique.
Step to teach :
1.      The teacher explains the learning objective (Public Place)
2.      Divide students into 2 equal groups.
3.      One group forms an inside circle and the other group will the form another circle around the outside of the first.
4.      The inside circle turns and faces the outside circle forming pairs.
5.      The teacher provided a question to be discussed and assigns either the inside our the outside circle to shared their thoughts their patner first. When the person finishes, the other person shares their thoughts.
6.      To increase accountability the teacher will ask individuals to shared what their partner said.
7.      After discussion with patner, student (inside / outside circle) will be cued to rotate (clockwise or counter clockwise) and face a new patner.
8.      Now turn on the outside circle of students who gave the information. so forth
Advantages:        
The advantage of this technique can be formulated as follow :
1.      This technique can make the students get different information at the same time on the material being taught (Public Place).
2.      These techniques can make students more easy and fun in learning English.
3.      This technique can make the students improve vocabulary and also to review the vocabulary terms.
Disadvantages :
As nothing perfect in the world, so does the technique. This technique has its own weaknesses namely :
1.      This technique (inside / outside circle) requires a large classroom so that teachers difficult to apply this technique if the classrooms are too small.
2.      This technique is too long to do so that students are not misused for concentration and abused for joking or teacher difficulty in manage classroom activities.
3.      This technique is complicated to do.

How To Teach Vocabulary


Struggling with how to teach vocabulary? For literacy impoverished students, it is critical that we expand, develop and are continually building academic vocabulary.

I love teaching vocabulary. It's possible that it is because I have a rather nerdy love of how words work and the origins of them, but my enthusiasm for it spills over into the classroom. I also know that all kids need solid instruction in developing their "toolbox of words."

We must always be keenly aware that students who do not come from a rich literacy background are already at a distinct disadvantage.
Not only do these kids not know the words, they have no idea how to break them down and use them in a meaningful way. It is up to us to try and fill the gap.

Even if you don't love playing with words, most of your students will (if not all). Children have an innate sense of fun and appreciation for puns, descriptive language and big words. Why not tap into that and teach how Greek and Latin roots and affixes come together to make multi-syllabic words?
And then there is the necessary academic vocabulary. These are the critical words students must know to understand and succeed in certain subjects.
For example, perimeter, quotient and minuend are all necessary words for understanding the language of mathematics. Here is a simple index card game for Tier 3 academic vocabulary that your students are guaranteed to love.

Research is showing that promoting word consciousness through deliberate modeling of academic vocabulary can add depth and substance to students abilities to use and understand more sophisticated words (The Reading Teacher, 63(5), p. 362).
It is a critical factor in developing reading skills, and instruction must be powerful.


This leaves many teachers wondering how to teach vocabulary in the best way that promotes word consciousness.
Not to worry: here are some fabulous ideas you can implement tomorrow in your own classroom!

Quick Vocabulary Lessons

1. How to Teach Vocabulary Using a Word of the Day

This resource comes from Primary Concepts. I have used it for four years and it is a great resource for primary teachers who need some help with their vocabulary lesson plans.


Each day there is a short story about the Wordly family that focuses on one vocabulary word. But what makes it unique is that each word is broken down into focusing on a prefix, suffix, Greek or Latin word part, etc. For example, the word "cheerful" is focused on the suffix "ful" and the students learn that it means "full of." Therefore the word "cheerful" means "full of cheer."

This is then applied to other words to help students learn how to derive word meaning from looking for the suffix and the root word.

There is not a single worksheet with it, which I love. It is very natural and I use it as part of my floor time each morning. I wrote all of the words onto index cards, underlined the focused part of each vocabulary word and we review them quickly each morning.


This is a fabulous way to promote word consciousness. By the way, I also use another resource by Primary Concepts called Idiom of the Week , and the kids find them to be hysterically funny. Again, it only takes a few minutes, but the results are amazing.

2. How to Teach Vocabulary With Nursery Rhymes

Choose a simple nursery rhyme, such as "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and challenge students to replace as many words as they can with synonyms that are more sophisticated.

I did this as a whole class activity a number of times before providing a gradual release to small groups. Here is what we came up with:

Shimmer, glimmer, miniature orb of fire,
How I ponder what you are.
Up above the globe so high,
Like a quadrilateral in the sky.
Sparkle, glisten, miniature sphere of fire,
How I query what you are.

Look at the academic vocabulary used in this lesson: globe, orb, quadrilateral, sphere…not to mention the adjectives and a great lead in to the word "mini" and how to look for it in other words describing small things (minivan, minuscule, etc).

I guided this, but my second graders could use their background knowledge to relate to these new words and I am seeing them pop up in their writing and hearing them use them in conversations!


3. How to Teach Vocabulary during an Interactive Read Aloud

It doesn't matter what the genre is…you can do this activity with any read aloud.

I always have sticky notes and a pen by my side, and when I find an interesting word during a read aloud I will stop, write it on the sticky note and quickly discuss the meaning of it.

A student then puts in on my Vocabulary Chart. This chart is simply four pieces of paper labeled Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives and Adverbs. For example, today we were reading about penguins and we came across the word sleek which described the outer layer of penguins feathers (we also hit "downy" for the underlayer).

We acted it out to target the kinesthetic learning style that many students have, then added it to the paper labeled "Adjectives," because that is how it was used in the story.

All of this only takes a minute or two: keeping it short so as not to disrupt the actual read aloud too much is key to keeping their attention.

Later the children can take the sticky notes off the paper to use in their writing when they need to. We also use them for sorts according to different characteristics and build bigger words from them (sleeker, sleekest).


4. How to Teach Vocabulary Using Word Wheels

Cut out some large circles. Draw a smaller circle in the middle, then draw spokes out to the edge from it to make 6-8 sections.

Inside the circle put a Greek or Latin root word or affix, along with the meaning of it. The students then brainstorm words with the same root or affix, write them in the sections and illustrate them.

These word wheels should be hung in the classroom as anchor charts for reference the rest of the year. It becomes a word wall that is highly focused on academic vocabulary.

I like to coordinate these with special holidays because those hold great importance in a primary classroom. My Valentine's Word Wheel uses the base word gram which means "write or draw", and the sections have words like: candygram, telegram, cryptogram, gramophone, monogram, and tangram.
Each word is illustrated for Valentine's Day, with the cryptogram being a secret "I Love You" message, and the tangram being the shape of a heart.

The younger the students the more direct instruction and guidance is needed, but this is a really neat way to address improving vocabulary in a powerful and robust manner. Plus, it's a lot of fun!
